Heart-Healthy Road Donuts(TM) Take A Bite Out Of Cholesterol; New Brandeis University Study Confirms The Effectiveness Of Phytosterols In Fatty Fried Foods

MERRILLVILLE, Indiana, Thursday, May 17, 2007/BeverageMarketing/ -- Road Pizza Company, the creators of the great-tasting, all-natural, California style; Heart Healthy Road Pizza®, are making it easier for donut devotees to lower their lower cholesterol; Heart-Healthy Road Donuts™, are the first donuts designed to lower cholesterol naturally. Heart Healthy Road Donuts are the brainchild of Ira Scott, a beverage executive who has been moonlighting as pizza dough maker, "It’s the same patent pending VitRx™ dough we use to make the Heart Healthy Road Pizzas, so why not use it for other baked goods, like donuts," says Scott.

Scott has already approached a variety of doughnut heavyweights including Krispy Kreme, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts about his sweet innovation. He thinks it’s just a matter of time before his Heart Healthy Road Donuts will fundamentally transform the reason why we eat the fried cakes. In collaboration with Brandeis University, Scott has been testing some experimental versions, and says he is extremely pleased. During a conference call, Scott said, "We see a lot of growth in how phytosterols can be delivered in what is considered un-healthy, junk-foods." Scott referred to this as the "better-for-you-junk-food" which may placate the "Food Police" as a conciliatory gesture. "Over at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) there is a real food fight brewing over which heart-attack-inducing ingredients may be used to make donuts. Simply put, thanks to nutraceutical like phytosterols, you can now have your cake and eat it too. The heart healthy donut now exists and should be on the market shortly." said Scott.

Upon review of existing evidence, the FDA concluded that "there is significant scientific agreement that phytosterols/phytostanols reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels." The FDA authorized a health claim describing the relationship between dietary intake of phytosterols and reduced risk of heart disease. That health claim states that "Foods containing at least 0.40 grams per serving of free (natural) phytosterols, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 grams, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease." In a published human clinical study (J. Nutr. 134: 1395-1399; 2004), researchers at Brandeis University gave study subjects 0.75 gram of free phytosterols twice daily for a four-week period. The phytosterols were provided in one ounce servings of tortilla snack chips. Subjects included both men and women, with moderately elevated levels of total cholesterol. Total cholesterol was reduced by approximately 10 percent and LDL cholesterol levels fell by almost 15 percent. The Road Pizza Company is in the process of licensing patents from Brandeis University, covering compositions and methods for incorporating heart healthy free phytosterols into certain types of food products.

"Donuts have long been considered the ‘black hole’ of nutrition, but perhaps in the near future, as predicted in Woody Allen’s film ‘Sleeper’ in which smoking and fried fatty foods are known by future scientists to be extremely good for you, perhaps with the introduction of phytosterol enhanced junk-foods, the later may be partly true today," says Richard H. Davis, President of Beverage Marketing USA, Inc., "In the future so-called junk-foods may be re-formulated with healthier nutraceuticals, to help balance out the Good, the Bad and the Ugly artery-clogging ingredients. Essentially it’s smart junk-food, higher nutritional education for donuts." said Davis.

Phytosterols are clinically shown to lower cholesterol as a part of a heart-healthy diet*
